Poocasso ‘22

(Personal Collection)

A reinterpretation of “Bust of a woman on a gray background” by Picasso, Pablo (1943). Our assignment was to find a piece of art by a “master” and copy it with the option of making your own. I saw this painting at the Guggenheim Picasso Black and White (October 5, 2012–January 23, 2013), the first exhibition to explore the remarkable use of black and white throughout the Spanish artist’s prolific career. This painting resonated with me. I snapped a picture of it at the time and use it as my avatar from time to time. The funny thing, it is a woman! In the spirit of making it my own, I added the color of purple to the black and white (my favorite color) and I also added a bow tie in the spirit of how I love it this art… in a non-binary way. It is signed “Poocasso ‘22” on the upper left with my signature on the lower right.

The intention was to frame this for the “32nd Annual Fakes and Forgeries” at the Spring Bull gallery in Newport. When Cheryl and I were picking out the frame we both decided it belonged in our own house. We can’t wait to hang it!
