Penmarc’h, shingle style bungalow named after a commune Brittany in north-western France, was designed to fit seamlessly into a historic beach side community abutting Narragansett Bay in Bristol, RI.  This modern bungalow was designed to be traditionally respective of its neighbors and refined in its historically based detailing, yet also be reinterpreted with a more modern open floor plan focused towards the water views. A lifelong sailor, the owner asked that the craft of boat building be an underlying theme of the design. Practically, the owner needed storage for two cars and sail loft storage, so we proposed two symmetrical under-scaled carriage house style garages, each connected by a Cape Cod style circular front driveway to provide a welcoming and casual sense of arrival.
